Robert Reed studied tap dancing with Maceo Anderson, an original member of the Four Step Brothers tap ensemble. He toured for six months with Cab Calloway and his orchestra in 1986. He established a tap dancing school in St. Louis, Missouri known as the Robert L. Reed Tap Heritage Institute.

Reed founded the first annual St. Louis Tap Festival in 1992. St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay declared July 30, 2005, to be "Robert L. Reed Tap Heritage Day".

Robert L. Reed II passed away on July 18, 2015 in Oklahoma City due to heart failure and a stroke.
