About the International Tap Association
Information about the International Tap Association.
Organization founded in 1987 at the Colorado Dance Festival in the United States by a group of tap dancing performers, teachers, historians, presenters, students, and fans. As of this writing, the organization is based in the city of Austin, Texas in the United States. The association was established to serve the needs of the tap dancing community and promote the understanding, preservation, and development of tap dancing as an art form. at the time the association was launched, Charles “Honi” Coles was designated honorary chairman, Gregory Hines was designated honorary president, and historian Sally Sommer was designated editor of publications. The association existed under the umbrella odf the Colorado Dance Festival, but in 2001 it became an independent organization. Activities and projects of the International Tap Association have included estabishing advocacy programs, educating dance professionals and the general public about thetap dancing, and preserving the art by encouraging research and documentation of the history of tap and tap dancers.
