A Short History of Bloch

A brief history of Bloch, maker of Bloch tap shoes other types of dancing shoes, and dancewear.

The Bloch company was founded in 1932 by Jacob Bloch, a shoemaker who emigrated from Lithuania to Australia in 1931. His new business was enough of a success that, within two years, he was able to bring his wife and three children from Lithuania to Australia.

Jacob Bloch began making custom pointe ballet shoes in 1932 at his workshop in the Paddington neighborhood of Sydney. He made custom pointe shoes in the late 1930's for visiting professional ballet dancers from Russia and elsewhere, including including David Lichine, Helene Kirsova, Irina Baranova, Olga Spessivtseva, Tamara Toumanova, Tamara Toumanova, and Tatiana Riabouchinskaya. he later began selling his pointe shoes throughout Australia.

Bloch later expanded its product line to include other types of dancing shoes, dancewear, and dancing accessories.

Today the company's corporate headquarters is in Sydney Australia and they have European headquarters in London, England. The company's flagship store is in Australia, they have 14 additional stores in Australia, they have one store in New York City, and European stores in Amsterdam, London, Paris, and Warsaw. Their products are also available through independent retail stores and online shops.
