About the Tapestry Dance Company

An introduction and general information about the Tapestry Dance Company, a tap dance ensemble based in Austin Texas. Tapestry is a performing and educating tap dance company founded in 1989 by tap dancer Acia Gray and ballet and jazz dancer Deirdre Strand.

Tapestry's Studio Space During its first ten years the company was based in an Austin warehouse off West Fifth Street, west of Lamar Avenue. When that building was torn down in 2007 the group moved to a 12,000 square foot rented building in the Westgate Neighborhood of Austin. After that property was sold in 2015, Tapastry sublet class and rehearsal space from local dance studios for about three years. In 2018, Tapestry signed a three year lease on a a new facility in the Pop Arts District at 1600 South Pleasant Valley Road in Austin's East Riverside neighborhood. The company moved there in September of 2018 and they opened for business there on October 1, 2018. Their new facility has four studios, all with O'Mara sprung maple floors and it is adjacent to a 300-seat theater.
