Brenda Bufalino founded the professional tap dancing ensemble known as the "American Tap Dance Orchestra" in 1986. Bufalino and Tony Waag founded "Woodpeckers Dance Center in the Soho neighborhood of New York City in 1989to teach tap dancing classes and produce tap dance workshops and performances.

The award recognized her visionary work ensuring the future of the American art form of tap dance with the formation of the American Tap Dance Orchestra and the American Tap Dance Foundation, for introducing innovative concepts to tap dance choreography, and for inspiring a new generation of tap dancers to expand the art form.
